Bonne lecture.
The 1971 event was held in conditions that could only be described as atrocious . It had rained none stop for two days before the event . Also, the troubles in N. Ireland came to the fore a few days before the races . The main worry was over the doubt about the likelihood of the Ulster not being counted in the Championship rounds, and this was not sorted out until a few hours before racing took part . The 50 cc race had been cancelled due to there being only 8 entries .
This left only four events and the rules stated that they must cater for five events . The organisers argued that they had catered for five events but couldn't be held responsible if the entries weren't forthcoming for one of these, this the FIM eventually accepted .
The 350 class was the first race of the day and missing from the line up was Agostini . He already had won the 350 Championship and it was believed that he wasn't happy coming here with the troubles that were taking place .When the race got under way the initial leader was Silvio Grassetti (M.Z.) . Chasing him were Dieter Braun (Yamaha) and Tommy Robb (Yamsel) .Rod Gould had retired before the end of the lap, his engine seized . Jarno Saarinen (Yamaha) was making his way up through the field after a poor start .He was in 2nd place behind Grassetti on the 3rd lap and passed him at Budore after Grassetti's bike began to misfire . Robb was now up in 2nd place but Saarinen
increased his lead by 10 seconds every lap until the 8th, when disaster struck . Saarinen slid off at the Hairpin and Robb took the lead with Braun now in 2nd place . Peter Williams (M.Z.) had been making his way through the field and moved into 2nd place . Then on the 10th lap Williams took the lead as Robb's bike lost power . At the end it was Williams in 1st place, Braun, 40 seconds down in 2nd place and Tony Jefferies (Yamaha) 3rd .
